Time is a Language

Time passes. Summer turns to fall. Winter into spring. The hands on the clock turn. You graduate from college and then thirty years pass. How did that happen? It seems like only yesterday. Where did time go? There is the chronology of time measured by clocks and calendars. But there is another kind of time. A depth of time. Feeling in time. This is what is meant by “eternal” life. Eternal life is not a long long time. No. It’s the kind of time that drills down into our soul and becomes timeless. This is the “still point” of T.S. Eliot. It is timeless time. These paintings reflect my exploration into the meaning of time, how it passes but also how it often feels unchanged. “Oceanic” captures for me the ceaseless, surging restlessness of time. It is undifferentiated like the ocean itself, but also defined by flowing color and texture, the way invisible rivers flow under the ocean. “Mystery in Orange” captures enthusiastic sexual energy, creativity and the boundless pursuit of aesthetic pleasure. This is an afternoon with someone who causes every cell in your body to come to life or an evening of painting or reading or writing. “Time is Beautiful” is a way of exploring what it means to find beauty in the midst of fleeting time. The intensity of beauty is forever dying. Rising and falling. Rising and falling. To think of time is to embark on a journey of mystery. This is what I’m trying to explore with my painting “Into a Mystery.” When I think of mystery, I think of Van Morrison singing, “Let go into the mystery . . .” Fighting time is useless; surrendering to it seems to be the pathway of wisdom. “It Still Burns” is my way of saying that some memories don’t go away; they burn holes through our lives. Painful memories. Tragic memories. They become eternal flames within us. Finally, there is “Concrescence.” (Yes, look it up. It’s a word.) Concrescence is how one event and then another and then another fold into the past, even while creating a new moment of experience.
